God's will. Those two little words can cause so much joy, anticipation, excitement, or they can create fear and anxiety and apprehension in our lives. Why is that? I believe that sometimes we don't fully understand what God's will is. We can easily confuse our desires and our wants with God's will for our lives.
I believe that if we truly want to know what God's will for our lives is, then we need look no further than His Word for direction and confirmation.
God is explicit in His word about what He wants for us and what He expects of us. Many times however we neglect to look in to His Word before making a decision, starting a relationship, investing His money, determining a direction for our lives.
It is true that God has a plan for each and every one of our lives, however it is our responsibility to seek Him for that direction. Search His Word thoroughly for guidance and confirmation on the path we plan to take.
If we are truly honest with ourselves, as we search His Word, if the plan or path we intend to follow is not of God then He will make that clear. God's Holy Spirit, residing in a believer will give us a warning signal, if we're pursuing a wrong path. We often disregard the Holy Spirit's warning and proceed because we've convinced ourselves that our desire is the Lord's will for us.
Knowing God's Word, and spending time in God's presence, can save us a tremendous amount of heartache, concerning His will for our lives, if we just do what we should do at every railroad crossing, Stop, Look and Listen.
I was reminded of this one afternoon driving on a country road in southwest Montana. I approached a railroad crossing while not paying attention. It was an uncontrolled crossing, no drop down gates to stop car traffic. I was almost to the tracks when I heard the loud long blast of the train engine. It was at that moment I looked to my right and saw a large Montana Rail Link train engine about to enter the intersection. Had I continued forward I would have been crushed, but because of the engine's warning blast I was able to stop and avoid near disaster.
It's the same in determining God's will for our lives, we need to Stop, Look and Listen. Stop and take time to seek God. Don't move forward impulsively. Make time to seek Him through His Word. Read it slowly, digest what He is saying. Then listen to the message He is giving. Don't ignore the promptings or the warnings of the Holy Spirit. Be obedient and do what God says.
God's will for us may not be what we think it is. It is better to get confirmation from the Lord about His will, for our lives, then to forge ahead and regret it later.
Seek God's will and as you do Stop, Look and Listen.
